History of the Middle of the World

Creation Middle of the World
Charles-Marie de La Condamine leads a geodetic expedition to Ecuador and determines the exact location of the equator. In 1736 a monument is built to mark the Middle of the World near Quito.

Ecuadorian Independence
Ecuador becomes independent from Spain along with other South American countries. The Middle of the World is located in Ecuadorian territory and becomes a symbol of independence and national identity.

Reconstruction
Due to errors in the original location of the Middle of the World, a reconstruction of the monument is carried out in a more precise location. A new monument known as Ciudad Mitad del Mundo is created.

National Monument
The Mitad del Mundo complex is declared a National Monument by the National Institute of Cultural Heritage of Ecuador, recognizing its historical and cultural importance.

Intiñan Museum
The Intiñan Museum, located near the Mitad del Mundo monument, is inaugurated. The museum offers interactive and educational exhibits on indigenous culture, geography and physics related to the equatorial line.
